Art that endures
In the artistic realm, sculptures remain one of the most difficult mediums to produce. This is a fascinating thought for collectors, considering the sea change of accessibility associated with other mediums: It took mere decades for digital photography to be in every hand, yet how many marble sculptures have been created in this time? With archival durability measured in centuries, and a history reaching back to the dawn of human creative efforts as one of the oldest artistic methods, sculptures are a solid investment and a classic choice.
A collection with classic taste
Our online shop features hundreds of quality sculptures, hand-selected by experts. If you appreciate the pursuit of beauty and perfection, begin this quest in our figure & nude category. Find life-size marble masterpieces, and nude pieces dating back to the 1st century. You may recognize Venus, Diana or Apollo in the soft curves of alabaster or bisque. Classic pieces regularly emerge in our shop and auctions.
If goddesses aren’t on your list, perhaps a bronze bust would suffice. Figures of historical and cultural importance pass through our gallery, such as Katharina de Medici, Richard Wagner, or Egon Schiele. View our bust & head category for today’s selection of impressive personas.
The awe of animal, human, and God
Equally powerful in expression is the form of an animal. Everything from panthers, lions and elephants to stags and eagles feature in our animal figure category. Hailing from an era when wilderness and might were used to elicit an aesthetic sense of awe, or to grapple with what defines human nature, these animal figures share a similar sentiment with the masterpieces available in our religious sculpture gallery. Select a piece with deep feeling, such as a hand-carved crucifix, figures of the Madonna or saints. Many items date back hundreds of years, with a rich history. Some items in our reliefs category also feature religious motifs.
From marble to bronze
The compelling materials used in sculptures accentuate the expression of the forms themselves. Walnut, bisque, alabaster, bronze… Master sculptors carefully selected the piece of marble to be used, even designing the motif with consideration to the veining and qualities of the material. Michelangelo wrote that an ideal marble figure should remain true to the original form of the stone. He travelled to quarries in person in search of the perfect block of marble.
In the case of historic bronze pieces, material has been both an advantage and a cause of demise. The ductility of this robust material allowed sculptors a remarkable versatility of forms - delicate limbs extending at last through open space. However, finding a large ancient bronze on the market today will be a challenge for collectors, as they have frequently been stolen and melted down, especially in times of war. This signals the especial value of a sizable bronze sculpture. As the originals were made in limited editions, and the molds destroyed after production, owning one of these pieces truly enriches a collection.
