We would like to introduce you to Peter Schweller, Auctionata expert in British Portraitures 17th to early 19th century, Old Master Paintings as well as British Paintings.
Growing up in a collecting environment, Peter Schweller developed a keen eye and appreciation for his father’s collection of portrait miniatures. With his quest to learn more about the “story” behind the sitters, he went on to study history and art history.
He furthered his studies in London at Christie’s Education. This lead to working in various capacities at auctions houses Christies and Sothebys in London and New York in their Old Master and British Pre 1850 painting departments. He furthered his auction experience at William Doyle, New York in their general painting department.
Since 1997, Peter Schweller has been a private dealer and agent dealing in Old Master and British paintings. The expert takes particular pride in one aspect of his work: he scours the world for 16th to 19th century portraits and does extensive detective work to determine their identity, then tries to reunite them with their descendants.
Some of his great finds have been portraits by artists such as Sir Anthony Van Dyck, Thomas Gainsborough, and Angelica Kauffman.
With his talent for research and an eye for art, clients of Peter Schweller have included private collectors, museums and other institutions in North America, Europe and Australia.
Peter Schweller lives and works in New York and London.
