The present bronze sculpture depicts a youthful Hermes, messenger of the Greek gods. He is seated on a rock in a relaxed pose, his feet adorned with strapped wings. The figure is cast after a bronze sculpture found at the Villa dei Papiri at Herculaneum, now at the Museo Archeologico Nazionale (inventory no. 5625). The latter is based on a 4rth or 3rd century BCE original and was only rediscovered in 1758 after having been buried during the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 AD.
The bronze figure shows some patina wear and fine scratches to the surface. The right hand and leg are restored. The height is 24 cm. (tfa)
