    Horst Janssen (1929-1995)
Horst Janssen, born in Oldenburg (Lower Saxony), was an important German postwar artist. Janssen came to Hamburg in the mid-1940s, where he started to study at the 'Landeskunstschule' (state school of art). Throughout his life, the artist focused on drawing and on the diversity of printing techniques, whereby he was determined by his great experimental force and his enormous creative urge. At the beginning of his career, around 1950, he made his first woodcuts in the tradition of Edvard Munch and the expressionists. A close collaboration with the gallery owner Hans Brockstedt, who organized his first exhibitions, published important catalogues and supported his career, followed beginning in the late 1950s. In 1969, Janssen received the graphic award of the Venice Biennial, by which he gained international notoriety. His work contains portraits, animals, and Hamburg cityscapes; it focuses on the relationship of man and woman, including a lot of erotic motifs, as well as satiric, bizarre and fantastic figures, which deal with social issues. Janssen often painted self-portraits, questioning himself frequently over the decades. Around 1970, he started to collaborate with the printer Hartmut Frielinghaus (called 'Friely'), who printed Janssen's etchings, and later published his catalogues raisonné, becoming a close friend and companion. Horst Janssen, who worked as an author as well, was a tireless and multi-talented artist, who is regarded as one of the most important artist of the city of Hamburg. (msc)
