Max Olderock (1895-1972)
The Hamburg artist Max Olderock began to study at the local Kunstgewerbeschule, after having completed an artisanal apprenticeship as a painter. After an interruption of several years during wartime, he graduated in 1923. He then worked as a freelance painter and equipped among other public buildings with murals. During the 2nd World War defamed as ‘degenerate’, he retreated into an inner emigration and limited his artistic activity to the design of tapestries. In 1954, he started to paint again. While his early, expressionistic work already shows clear influence of constructivism, it distinctively comes to the fore in his works that originated from the 1950s onwards. (cko)
