Sonja Braas – In Authentic Nature

Presented in cooperation with Galerie Tanit: Explore the boundaries of reality and perception in this breathtaking collection of photographs.

About this collection

Sonja Braas is very concerned with perception. In her work, she deliberately sets out to distort your understanding of reality, playing upon your expectations and pre-conceived notions. Her photographs, large-scale works of ‘natural’ scenes and detailed depictions of human environments, are all staged using models she constructs in her studio.

She uses these models to give a level of abstraction to the pictures, inserting a certain detachment between the image and the viewer. The realization that you are not seeing the reality that you expected, allows the viewer to look at the picture truly as a ‘picture’, and causes the viewer to begin to distrust his or her emotions and perceptions.

Sonja Braas says that she wants “you to become very suspicious of photography, as well as of your own thoughts.” Her photographs subvert expectations, and the artificiality of the scenes echo the counterfeit construction of nature in the public’s imagination. They deliberately imitate nature documentaries and glossy magazine, calling out the unstated artificiality inherent in their work. In the end, the viewer is confronted with a representation of a representation, and Sonja’s aim of disorienting the viewer is complete.
