We would like to introduce you to Peter Dangerfield, Auctionata expert in Medals & Orders.
Peter Dangerfield spent 24 years at Sotheby’s and ten years at Christie’s in a wide variety of roles. A historian by training and a passionate collector of medals and orders, he fulfilled a long-held dream by setting up an internet-based business, Medal-Medaille, early in 2006 which has now become the largest online offering in the field.
His aim is to broaden interest in medals and orders by treating them as works of art and setting them in their historical context. The archive section on the site is now the most comprehensive source of information on the subject readily available.
“My work combines all the things I like best - great works of art, history, research, cataloguing, marketing, good administration - and meeting some truly extraordinary people,” he says.
Mr. Dangerfield started collecting medals and orders quite by chance when looking for interesting objects for his family home in western France. An 1865 silver medal for the veterans of the Charente was the start of an adventure that led from France to the pre-1918 Balkan countries, through the rest of Europe and finally to every country around the globe.
He most enjoys identifying rare but not necessarily expensive medals and, above all, helping clients reassemble the long-lost awards of their grandparents and great-grandparents to be passed down to future generations.
Peter Dangerfield lives and works in London.
