We would like to introduce you to Tom Higginson, Auctionata expert in Antique Desks.
Tom Higginson grew up with a love of fine antique furniture his parents collected or had inherited. A schoolboy hobby of general woodwork soon turned into the serious study and restoration of antique furniture. He has held a deep fascination for fine antique desks since he was a boy.
A turning point came in 1985 when Mr. Higginson branched out and began dealing and retailing high quality 18th to early-20th century English and Irish furniture. He relocated to Ireland in 2000 and opened his shop, Tara Antiques, specializing in English and Irish antique furniture, particularly fine antique desks. Since 2009, he has dealt solely in genuine 18th to early-20th century desks and office furniture, operating out of a small, historic 18th century Irish country house.
From great affairs of business to writing simple letters to friends, sitting at a genuine antique desk is to sit where so many others have sat before, with very much the same tasks, thoughts and problems we now bring to them. These desks are always strongly constructed, made as working furniture to last generations. They appear in many styles and range from small to huge and from simple, restrained early English Georgian to ornate French and exuberant Sheraton Revival styles.
Last year Tom discovered and restored a unique early-19th century English military campaign desk, numbered and stamped ‘Apollo’. His research revealed it was from HMS Apollo, a Royal Naval fighting ‘Ship of the Line’ from Lord Nelson’s day. The expert is a long-standing member of LAPADA and CINOA.
Tom Higginson lives and works in Ireland.
