We would like to introduce you to Charles Mathes, Auctionata Expert in Modern Art, Picasso Ceramics as well as.20th Century Tapestries, Prints, Paintings and Sculpture.
Mathes began his career at Rodgers & Hammerstein, where he ran the division that licensed the performance rights for classic American musicals. Richard Rodgers was a great art collector, and Mathes eventually found himself more interested in the important paintings and prints that decorated the office than in the business of theatre.
After going through the NYU appraisal program and apprenticing with an important Manhattan art appraiser, Mathes began the second act of his career in the business of art. Ultimately he spent over twenty years as director of the Jane Kahan Gallery, an internationally known gallery specializing in Modern master prints, tapestries and ceramics by Picasso, Chagall, Miró and Léger. He is now an independent appraiser, consultant and advisor.
Since 1988 Charles Mathes has performed hundreds of certified appraisals of fine and decorative artworks for clients that have included museums, corporations, municipalities and private collectors.
He is the author of several books including Treasures of American Museums and a series of art- and antiques-related mystery novels from St. Martin’s Press. His expertise in modern art has been quoted in publications ranging from Art & Antiques magazine to The Financial Times, and he has lectured on Picasso ceramics, modern tapestries and other subjects to various art-related groups including the AAA (Appraisers Association of America), of which he has been a member since 1992.
Charles lives and works in New York.
