We would like to introduce you to Peter Shemonsky, Auctionata expert in Jewellery (19th century – present).

Peter Shemonsky developed a love of jewellery growing up in New England, where he was classically trained as a designer and goldsmith. He found his niche in the auction world through his work with renowned companies on antique and estate jewellery.

In 2000, Mr Shemonsky was appointed head of the jewellery department at Butterfield & Butterfield, which was later acquired by Bonhams. He then became director of the San Francisco and Hong Kong offices at jewellery and watch buying company CIRCA. In 2010 he set up his own private salon specialising in fine, antique and estate jewellery.

Mr. Shemonsky is a writer and instructor for the International Society of Appraisers Antique and Period Jewelry course and co-director of the West Coast chapter of the American Society of Jewelry Historians. He has made numerous television appearances appraising jewellery on Antiques Roadshow in the USA.

His most memorable achievements included finding an unsigned Louis Comfort Tiffany silver and enamel belt exhibited at the 1904 St. Louis exhibition; handling Francoise Hermann’s collection, the highest-selling single owner jewellery sale at Bonhams; and appraising an Asian monarch’s jewellery collection.

Peter Shemonsky lives and works in San Francisco.
