We would like to introduce you to Howard Rutkowski, Auctionata expert in Contemporary Asian Art.

After studying art history at Tufts University and at the Institute of Fine Arts at New York University, Howard Rutkowski began working for Sotheby's auction house in New York in 1979. He worked as an expert in 19th Century, Impressionist and Modern Art. A thirteen-year career at Sotheby’s culminated in his appointment as Managing Director of Sotheby’s Korea, where he also acted as the Western painting specialist for the entire Far East, working closely with collectors, gallerists and museums throughout the region

Howard Rutkowski's first foray into Asia took place in 1987, when he personally hand-carried van Gogh’s “Irises” to Tokyo. The painting was sold for the then-record price of 54 million U.S. dollars. Since then, he has been active in all aspects of the primary and secondary markets in the region. In 1995, he organized the first major retrospective of Andy Warhol work for the Taipei Fine Arts Museum.

In 1999, he was appointed Head of Impressionist and Modern Art at Phillips in New York, and was named the overall Head of Fine Arts. With the absorption of Phillips’ international business by Bonhams in 2002, Howard joined Bonhams London as Director of Modern & Contemporary Art, instituting the company’s first sales of Contemporary Art and its inaugural sales of Contemporary Asian Art in London in June of 2006 and in Hong Kong in 2007.

In 2006 he joined Mary Dinaburg to form Fortune Cookie Projects, a curatorial and advisory company, to take advantage of the dynamic movement in the art markets in the Far East.

Howard Rutkowski lives and works in Singapore.
