We would like to introduce you to Tilo Hofmann, Auctionata expert in Atlas and Maps as well as Incunables, Old Prints & Manuscripts and Decorative Prints.
Tilo Hofmann was born in the book capital of Leipzig in 1965. Even as a young boy he took pleasure in the modest historical treasures that one could purchase in what was then East Germany. During college he earned his living by trading and by restoring furniture and antiques, later becoming a passionate collector.
In early 2001, an inconspicuous old book discovered in the Internet changed the life of the sales and marketing manager. His enthusiasm for the artistic and elaborate cover, the embossing and chasing, the powerfully tactile printed letters, the handwritten notations of former owners, the patina of the astonishingly strong paper and the fact that it was without a doubt something original from the year 1484 sparked his passion for incunabules and old prints.
In 2003 the expert founded and built up the online trading company sedulitas kunstmarketing. While still serving as managing partner of Antiqua Global Art GmbH & Co.KG, he shifted his main occupation in 2006 into the world of historical art, thus turning his hobby into a dream profession. In 2008 he founded the art trading firm Hofmann Kunstmarketing, and in 2012 he founded the consulting firm ARTFINDING GbR, where he advises interested collectors on procuring art objects and collections.
Since 2003, more than 6,000 top-quality incunabules, books, manuscripts, atlases, maps, graphics and certificates have found new homes with hundreds of satisfied new owners from every continent.
For him, the decisive role in describing a book is played not by the work’s age, but rather by its market potential owing to its special characteristics. Tilo Hofmann is a member of the International League of Antiquarian Booksellers (ILAB).
One of his personal favorites is a handwritten Bible from the Mathurin atelier that was penned on virgin parchment in Paris circa 1250.
Tilo Hofmann lives and works in Weidenhain.
