We would like to introduce you to Karen Augusta, Auctionata expert in Antique Costumes as well as Antique Lace & Textiles.

Karen Augusta is a fashion, lace, and textile expert, museum consultant, and appraiser.

Her New England childhood was immersed in fine art and couture clothing. She learned to appreciate construction details and style from her mother, a fashion illustrator, and composition and history from her father, a prominent Boston portrait artist. Ms Augusta began collecting antique clothing in the 1960's.

She has a particular interest in late 18th to early 20th century everyday clothing and work wear - examples of these garments are quite rare. Also close to her heart is handmade lace. A thrilling hunt began when Ms Augusta was offered a unique lace coverlet. Many clues in the lace, and months of research later, this piece is documented as having originally belonged to Empress Elizabeth of Austria, wife of Emperor Franz Josef, the last of the Hapsburg Empire’s rulers.

She has worked with many institutional and private collectors and is a member of the Costume Society of America and the Textile Society of America.

Karen Augusta lives and works in Vermont.

An auction sensation from the backmost corner of the wardrobe

As a veteran clothing and textile appraiser for the popular public television series “Antiques Roadshow” and owner of America’s top auction house for vintage fashion and textiles, I am requested by many institutions and private parties to appraise costume collections or to review items for inclusion in my specialty auctions. One such request came to me in June 2011 from a man living near Newark, New Jersey.
