Victor Wiener is an art historian, art consultant, expert, art dealer, lecturer and appraiser who started his career in various museums, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York and the Victoria and Albert Museum in London.
Afterwards, he worked for various international auction houses including a position as Director of Fine Arts at Christie's in London and Rome, as well as with Sotheby's in New York and in the Roman auction house La Cassa di Rasparmio, where he was in charge of Old Masters and 19th Century paintings. For over 21 years, he managed the Appraisers Association of America in New York before starting his own private practice as an art appraiser. Victor Wiener is a certified USPAP instructor - the Uniform Standards of Professional Appraisal Practice (USPAP) of the Appraisal Foundation, which is authorized by the U.S. Congress as a standard-setting authority and source of expert qualifications.
He has lectured on the appraisal of Fine and Decorative Arts at The New School and at Baruch College, both in New York.
He has more than 20 years teaching experience on the faculty of New York University, where he lectures on USPAP guidelines and the “Legal and Ethical Responsibilities for Appraisers” program. He is the co-author of several appraisal standards, including those set by the Appraisers Association of America.
Victor Wiener has acted as an appraiser for several well-known estates, for example those of Andy Warhol and Louise Nevelson. He recently completed the loss and damage assessment for Picasso's work “Le Reve,” which is currently owned by Stephen Wynn. His testimony in this case contributed to the clarification of a public insurance dispute, which led to the payment of damages amounting to 139 million U.S. dollars.
As a private appraiser, he specializes in the evaluation of art in collateralized transactions, litigation in resolving art trade disputes and loss and claims settlement in insurance cases.
