We would like to introduce you to Thomas Sommer, Auctionata expert in Rare Wine.
Thomas Sommer is a passionate and dedicated sommelier. In recent years he has taken part in the some of biggest national and international competitions, and won numerous awards. He was awarded with the “Sommelier of the year 2013“ by Gault-Millau, “Master of Wines“ of the Cologne Cuisine Festival CHEF-SACHE, “Germany's best sommelier“ and “Best Riesling menu in Germany 2011/2012“.
He began his career training as a hotel manager. After his apprenticeship and ‘Wanderjahren’ (wandering years) through Germany, Great Britain and France, he continued his education in hotel management at the Heidelberg Hotel Management School. During his studies, he became a professional, certified sommelier at the Chamber of Industry and Commerce (IHK) and received the “Diploma in Wine and Spirits“ from the renowned London “Wine and Spirit Education Trust“ (WSET), one of the highest qualifications in the wine business.
Following his education, Thomas Sommer worked in many renowned restaurants and hotels. He worked, among other roles, as commis-sommelier at the hotel Brandenburger Hof in Berlin and was head sommelier in the Marriott Hanbury Manor Hotel & Country Club in Hertfordshire, before settling down in the Rhineland.
Since 2008, Thomas Sommer has been the head sommelier in the Gourmetrestaurant Lerbach near Cologne, alongside Michelin star chef Nils Henkel. He also manages the excellent wine cellar of the affiliated castle hotel.
Thomas Sommer´s personal aspiration and daily challenge is to create an unforgettable experience for his guests. As well as his daily work, Thomas Sommer also consults at Sommelier-Consult, passionately passing on his experiences and vast knowledge about wine.
