We would like to introduce you to Matthew Grice, Auctionata expert in British Modernism, Bauhaus and Czech Avant-Garde.

Matthew Grice has been collecting 20th century design since the early 1990s. Two university degrees in art and design history ignited his passion for the subject. Mr. Grice’s expertise covers the broad period from Arts and Crafts Movement to the postmodern 1980s, but his specialist field is unquestionably 1920s and 1930s modernism.

With a background in journalism, he took the opportunity to transform this passion into a livelihood by becoming a dealer in vintage design in the mid-2000s, serving both collectors and design professionals. He has supplied, for example, original period fittings for high-end architectural and interior design projects, as well as exceptional artifacts of historical significance to museums.

Over many years, Mr. Grice has gained a detailed knowledge of the Bauhaus school’s output during its fourteen restless years of existence. Czech avant-garde design of the same period is another subject that has captured his attention. Czechoslovakia benefitted from the free flow of progressive ideas, partly because of its central geographic location, as it also absorbed Cubism, Dada, and the polemics emanating from Bauhaus, Dutch De Stijl and Russian Constructivist circles to forge a distinctive – and until now somewhat overlooked - contribution to the modernist avant-garde.

Matthew Grice lives and works in London.
