    Additional Information & Condition

This beautiful table globe was manufactured in the Austria-Hungarian factory of teaching materials ‘J. Felkl & Sohn’ in Rostok by Prague, now part of the Czech Republic. The globe is attached with a brass pole to a lathed wooden column holder at a tilted angel. The axis which runs through both poles is fixed to the ball with a small brass screw. The globe stands on a lathed round wooden floor-stand which is painted black. The ball shows all continents, oceans and currents on smooth lithographed paper, providing graphic depiction material for geography lessons of the late 19th and first half of the 20th century. Back then globes were mass-produced articles that were manufactured in businesses. Individual braces for the globe were reproduced with lithography instead of the costly common method of copperplate engraving. The reduced manufacturing costs increased the popularity of globes, especially school globes.

The globe is inscribed ‘Erdkugel Globus Druck u. Verlag v. J. Felkl & Sohn Lehrmittelfabrik in Rostok bei Prag’ and is overall in good condition showing slight signs of age and wear such as light superficial abrasions. Few light tensions cracks in the foot. Overall of good condition. Height: c. 60 cm.
