The original version was painted by Eugène Isabey in 1852/53 and is lost. The painting has inspired several contemporaries: besides Auguste L'Hotellier, Carl Spitzweg (1808-1885) is one of the artists. He painted three versions of the subject, of which one is in the collection of the Alte Nationalgalerie in Berlin.
The painting is in good condition, according to age, showing craquelure and minor abrasion. The inspection under UV light reveals several strokes of retouching to the margins, as well as a few minor touch-ups within the depiction. The canvas bears three patches on the reverse. The frame shows traces of an inactive woodworm infestation and marks from a former mounting on the reverse. The dimensions are 31 x 54 cm, while the frame measures 49 x 72 cm. (cko)
