    Additional Information & Condition

Beside from facing up with his own personality and from the statement of his self-understanding as an artist the portrait shows the state of development of his art. The use of larger colored zones and the abandonment of spatial illusion are characterized by the influence of fauvism; the artist learned about this movement while he was in Paris.

The painting is in very good condition; with tiny craquelure in the part of the lateral edges. Under UV light a few retouched spots can be seen at the edges and a tiny retouched spot is in the left part of the figure affecting the hair.

    Vladimir Davidovic Baranov-Rossiné (1888-1942/44)

Vladimir Davidovic Baranov-Rossiné began to study painting in 1902 in Odessa before he changed to the academy in St. Petersburg a few years later. The painter quickly became part of the Russian avant-garde and joined in several exhibitions. From 1910 until 1914 Baranov-Rossiné lived in Paris, where he stayed in the artist´s colony 'La Ruche' and made friends with Robert and Sonia Delaunay. Back in Russia at the end of the 1910s he taught at the state art college in Moscow. In 1925 Baranov-Rossiné emigrated to Paris. His style was at the beginning under the influence of van Gogh and postimpressionist art movements followed by fauvism and abstraction. The artist was very eager to try out new things, thus he often brought elements of different styles together. During the German occupation Baranov-Rossiné was deported into a concentration camp, where he was executed. (msc)
