    Nikolai Alexandrovich Benois (1901-1988)
Nikolai Alexandrovich Benois was trained by his father Alexandre Benois from an early age on, who was the scenographer and scenic director of the imperial Mariinsky Theater in St. Petersburg, later by Oreste Allegri in his studio in St. Petersburg. From 1919-21 he completed stage designs for the Petrograd Theater following his father's designs. With a scholarship, Benois left Russia in 1924 and lived in Paris for about 2 years, where he worked for the Théâtre Fémina and the opera. From 1927 onwards he was based in Italy, until 1931 in Rome and then in Milan. He received numerous commissions by theaters and opera houses and soon became one of the most sought-after stage designers of Italy. Beside stage designs, Benois also painted landscapes and portraits. His works can among other be seen at the Benois Museum in Peterhof, at the Russian Museum in St. Petersburg and at Teatro alla Scala in Milan. (nlu)
