    Additional Information & Condition

    Condition:

All margins of the woodcut are trimmed. Thus, the estate stamp with the estate signature by Maria Marc ‘Handdruck vom Originalholzstock bestätigt: Maria Marc’ (Lugt 1782b) has been eliminated. Additionally, a strip of c. 0.5 cm is sharply folded back in all margins, resulting in numerous paper breaks, paper losses, defects and tears. A somewhat longer tear (c. 2.5 cm) in the right margin is skillfully restored. The image is in good condition with fresh colors.

    Franz Marc (1880-1916)

Born in Munich in 1900, the artist studied at the art academy under Wilhelm von Diez and Gabriel Hackl. He traveled to Italy, Greece and Paris where he was impressed by the artists of Impressionism and by Van Gogh. 1910 Marc met Wassily Kandinsky, with whom he founded the artist group ‘Der Blaue Reiter’ in 1911. Striving after a spiritualization of form and looking for an image for creation as a whole Franz Marc took to animal depictions, which colors he uncoupled from nature he charged symbolically. Famous are blue horses. From 1913 until his untimely death in 1916 he turned to an abstract painting.
