The Mercedes 230 SL, which owners of the 300 SL found too simple and drivers of the 190 SL too expensive, soon convinced both target groups. It turned out a great success, not least for its unique and timelessly elegant shape. The modern line matched the tastes of the 60s and the 70s, which were coined by Finish design furniture, Cubist architecture and sporty and elegant fashion. The 150 hp strong 230 SL was followed by the 250 SL in 1966 and by the 170 hp strong 280 SL in 1968. The inwardly bulged hardtop improved its aerodynamics, access and safety and led to the description 'Pagoda', which never was officially used though.
