The oeuvre of the sculptor is in a large part characterized by the expressive marble busts which belong to the highlights of the portrait art; they show a lot of famous contemporary personalities.
The bust is in good condition, slightly soiled and with scratch marks and overall with scattered irregularities.
Francesco Jerace (1854-1937)
Francesco Jerace was born in 1854 in Calabria. He began his education as a pupil of his grandfather Francesco Morani who worked as an architect and sculptor. Since 1869 he studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Naples. His teachers were among others Tito Angelini and Tommaso Solari. In Naples, he met important contemporary artists such as Enrico Alvino, Gabriel Smargiassi and Edoardo Dalbono. Jerace worked with the materials marble, gesso and bronze. His oeuvre presents historical, mythological, allegoric and religious subjects as well as portraits and a few genre scenes. Beside from his work as a sculptor the artist was also active as a painter, draftsman, decorator and architect. (msc)
