Since the mid-18th century, the clockmaker family operated a company, which worked with the best workshops, for example in the production of bronzes for the cases. The founder of the watchmaking dynasty, Jean-André Lepaute, had established the business in the mid-1740s, in 1747 his younger brother Jean Baptiste Lepaute got on board. Both brothers were appointed royal clockmakers and signed their clocks ‘Lepaute Horologer du Roi’. In 1774 Jean-André’s two nephews, Pierre-Basile and Pierre Henry Lepaute entered the company as partners and on the 14th of May 1789 eventually took over the business. However, in 1795, Pierre Henry left his cousin and form this time onwards, produced clocks with the signature ‘Henry à Paris’ and ‘Henry Lepaute à Paris’. Pierre-Basils’ nephew Jean-Joseph founded the workshop ‘Lepaute neveu à Paris’ in 1811, which he later handed on to his son-in-law and cousin Augustin-Michel Henry. At the same time, Pierre-Basil established the business ‘Lepaute & Fils‘ together with his son Pierre-Michel, whereby they continued to use the signature ‘Lepaute à Paris’ as well as the title ‘Horologer de l'Empereur’ and ‘Horologer du Roi’.
