Peter Schmidt (1931-1980)
Peter Schmidt was a British artist with many different interests and fields of activity at the interface of art, music and film: Schmidt worked as a painter, graphic artist, designer, performance artist and color theoretician and up from 1960 he was a teacher at the Watford College of Art, where he had an important influence on his students. The Berlin-born whose family was of Jewish descent, emigrated in 1938 because of the political situation in Nazi Germany with his mother to England. Over there he studied art at the Goldsmiths College and at the Slade School in the 1950s. His first solo-exhibition took place at the Beaux Art Gallery in London. The work of the artist, who later focused on cybernetics and abstracted systems, is characterized by the connection of different artistical fields such as fine art and music (e.g. the series ' PROGRAM').
