The large scenery shows the copy of a surprising attack of papal troops on Italian bandits after the French painter Emile Jean Horace Vernet. The original slightly varying in the background can be found today in the collection of the Walters Art Museum, Baltimore.
The painting is in age-related condition. Verso patched with a piece of canvas. The paint surface shows slight overall craquelure and two small blemishes lower right, the varnish is somewhat discolored. The inspection under UV light reveals overall retouching and scattered overpainting. The frame bears some small bumps and rubbings to the corners and edges. However the painting is visually in appealing codition. (bde)
