The painting presents a young girl writing a letter with quill in her hand by candlelight. She seems to be pausing for a moment, moving her head thoughtfully aside. This intimate interior image of a figure in a dark setting lit up only by the candle is a characteristic work of the Dutch painter.
The painting is in good condition. Tiny craquelé can be seen overall on the canvas and scattered marks and a few scratches. There are areas with scuffing due to the frame along the upper edges and corners of the canvas. Several retouched spots can be seen mainly affecting the upper edge and the upper left corner has been fixed. The frame is in good condition too and shows traces of usage such as tears and spots with loss of color. A small spot with loss of material is affecting the lower edge.
Johannes Rosierse (1818-1901)
The Dutch painter Johannes Rosierse was an artist of the 19th century and painted primarily genre scenes. His most important subject were interior images with staffage: He focused on individual figures or on groups arranged by candlelight in dark interiors. Frequently he painted kitchens presenting a synopsis of food such as fruits and vegetables en passant. Works of the artist can be seen in the museum of his hometown Dordrecht as well as in Musée Fabre in the Southern French Montpellier. (msc)
