Otto Dix (1891-1969)
Otto Dix was born in 1891 near Gera and is considered one of the most famous German painters and graphic artists of the 20th century. He initially served an apprenticeship as a decoration painter in his hometown. From 1910 to 1914, he studied at the arts college in Dresden. After the First World War, he co-founded the Dresden Secession in 1919. His best-known works are from the Weimar period, sometimes humorously but often harshly criticizing the societal conditions in the postwar period. Dix was professor at the arts academy in Dresden until he was expelled after the Nazi takeover in 1933. The artist left behind an extensive body of work with over 6,000 drawings and sketches. (msc)
