    Loetz Witwe

The products of the Bohemian glass manufactory Lötz Witwe constitute a highlight of Art Nouveau. In 1840, Johann Lötz bought the glassworks in Klostermühle, which were originally founded in 1836. After his death, the company was directed by his widow who eventually passed it on to her grandson Max Ritter von Spaun. Von Spaun modernized the operation and helped it in achieving world fame. The high-quality glass was sought after, especially because of its purity, intense colours and the metallic iridescent phenomenal decor. Lötz’ Witwe cooperated with important manufacturers such as J. & L. Lobmeyr, E. Bakalowits Söhne and Argentor-Werke and employed renowned artists like Josef Hoffmann, Koloman Moser and the Wiener Werkstätte. (nlu)
