    Kurt Vonnegut (1922 – 2007)

Vonnegut was born in Indianapolis, Indiana to the American Middle West. He studied at Cornell in the early 1940s before enlisting in the army. The armed forces sent him to what is now Carnegie Mellon University to study engineering before shipping him to serve in Europe. There, he fought in the Battle of the Bulge. After the battle, Vonnegut was captured and became a German prisoner of war. He was held in Dresden during the Allied bombing of the city, where witnessed the complete devastation that it caused. Vonnegut narrowly escaped harm during the attack because he, beside other prisoners, was working in an underground meat locker making vitamin supplements. After the war, during the 1960s, he emerged as a novelist and essayist, writing, “Cat’s Cradle (1963)”, “Slaughterhouse Five (1969),” and “Breakfast of Champions (1973)” to enormous acclaim, despite repeated bouts of depression. By his death in 2007, Vonnegut had established himself as one of America’s most influential satirists. His works featuring new worlds, blending science fiction, political commentary, and absurd humor.
