The combination of a trophy-like designed bull's head, which refers to the controversial Spanish-Portuguese tradition of bullfighting, turns due to the red lace cover -crafted in the traditional techniques of crochet and knipling- into a dramatic and profound work that allows versatile interpretations.
The wall sculpture is in overall good condition. There is a small chip (0.5 x 2 cm) at the lower edge. The sculpture measures 59 x 60 x 54 cm.
Joana Vasconcelos (b. 1971)
Joana Vasconcelos was born in Paris. She graduated in Fine Arts from the art school Ar.Co in Lisbon in 1996. She gained international notoriety with her participation in the 55th Venice Biennale. In 2006, she was awarded the prize ‘The Winner Takes It All’ by the Berardo Institute in Lisboa. A movie (Joana Vasconcelos: Coração Independente, 2009) shows her at work with her team. A documentary about the artist was broadcast by ARTE in 2010. Next to installations and sculptures, the artist also works in the fields of video art, photography and performances.
