Evolution of the Interior

A mirror into the daily lives of our ancestors, created in the artistic expression of a particular place and time. An antique preserves the skilled craftsmanship and aesthetics of the past for future generations of collectors and connoisseurs. An antique creates living history in the home, lending a unique character wherever it is situated, and is perfectly suited to be combined with modern elements.

Antiques & Collectibles

An antique is a statement from the past, preserving the place and time of its creation in its design and aesthetic. It allows insight into the lives of its former owners. An antique can accordingly be a tangible intellectual inspiration that stands on its own, but it can also create a new world through its interaction with other older or modern elements, bringing different stories together. However, an antique is not just decoration for your home; it is an artifact from the past, enjoyed in the present, and kept as an investment in the future. Rarity ensures that the value will not decrease, and it can be held for the enjoyment of future generations.

Clocks

The clock is one of the oldest human inventions, allowing mankind to impose order upon the world around them. Although sundials and water clocks have been used since ancient times to measure time, the first mechanical clocks date to around 1300. Various types of clock are popularly collected by antiquarians, particularly wall clocks. A carriage clock is a small, spring-driven clock, designed for travelling, developed in the early 19th century in France. A longcase clock, also known as a grandfather clock, is a tall, freestanding, weight-driven pendulum clock.

Persian rugs

One of the most popular categories of antique collectibles is oriental carpets. These are handmade, pile-woven, heavy rugs, produced in Iran and the surrounding areas which once formed the Persian Empire. Carpet weaving is an essential part of Persian culture and art. The earliest-known pile-woven carpet dates to the 5th century BC, but it indicates a longer history of evolution and experience in weaving. The first reference to Persian carpets in world literature, in Xenophon’s Anabasis, already puts them into a context of luxury, prestige, and diplomacy. Persian rugs are often named after the region in which they are manufactured.

Antique furniture

Antique furniture surrounds us with history, giving us the impression of being able to feel it in our daily lives. It fascinates us with its precious materials, its quality and its artistic craftsmanship. Yet on a more prosaic level, it creates a stylish atmosphere in our homes. Coveted historic furniture is regularly auctioned by collectors, from antique dressers from the Biedermeier period, Art Deco cupboards, antique mirrors, to tables, chairs and picture frames from the Renaissance or Baroque periods.

Ephemera

The term ‘ephemera’ refers to any fragile written or printed matter. For antiques and collectibles, this can include antiquarian books, antique atlases and medieval manuscripts. Rare and antique books are highly collectible, and there is a fierce and well-established trade in them. More medieval manuscripts survive from the Middle Ages than any other artistic medium, and they are highly prized by collectors for their beauty. Antique maps and atlases are also widely collected, and make popular wall decoration.

Collectibles

Collectibles need not necessarily be something of great age or historical value, however. Some of the most popular collectible objects are curios such as toys, antique weapons, or porcelain figures. Objets de vertu are small decorative pieces noted for their fineness of material and craft. Perhaps the most prized examples today are the resplendent series of Easter-eggs made by the Russian House of Fabergé for Tsars Alexander III and Nicholas II in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
