  • Antique Vienna & English Clocks 1780 to 1920

Bio

  • Classical professional training as clock maker
  • For ten years, he taught the theoretical component of the clockmaking master craftsman class in Vienna. He then authored a well-known textbook on the subject
  • Member of the Antiquarian Horological Society
  • Since 1986, proprietor of a business for antique clocks and clock restoration

Dr. Andreas Preindl discovered his love of old clocks and timekeeping equipment in his parents’ clock and jewelry shop. One of his many accomplishments after leaving school was training as a clockmaker, largely under the strict expert supervision of his father. Since then, his main focus has been old Vienna clocks and their history, restoration and preservation.

He discovered another love through his English wife: English console and grandfather clocks. This also led him to study historical comparisons of both types of clock.

Dr. Preindl taught the theoretical section of the master’s course for clockmakers in Vienna for ten years, and also compiled the accompanying textbook. He has conducted further studies in England and Germany, compiled various specialist articles and works of literature on English and Vienna clocks, and gives talks and lectures, during which he mainly provides collectors and owners with insights on their clocks.

Dr. Preindl has long been a member of the British Antiquarian Horological Society, and is ever present in the interest field of electromechanical clocks.

He has run a shop in Vienna with his son since 1986, specialising in antique clocks and their restoration. His day-to-day activities involve professional appraisals and valuations for clients and auctioneers.
